Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote
Puerto del Carmen guide for Irish holidaymakers: direct flights, weather by season, where to stay and tips for finding a late deal.
Updated Saturday 17 October 2026
Why go
Puerto del Carmen is the main tourist town on Lanzarote. Most of the island’s visitors stay here. It has long been popular with Irish holidaymakers, so it feels familiar from the first evening.
The town was a small fishing village until the Hotel Los Fariones opened in 1967. Today its seafront promenade, the Avenida de las Playas, runs for about 7 km along the south coast. It is lined with restaurants, shops and bars, with beaches below.
Getting there from Ireland
Lanzarote has some of the best Irish flight choice of any sun destination. Based on current airport route tables:
- Dublin: Aer Lingus and Ryanair, plus seasonal TUI charters
- Cork: Aer Lingus
- Shannon: Ryanair
- Knock: Ryanair
- Belfast International: Jet2, Ryanair, plus easyJet and TUI seasonally
The flight from Dublin takes about four hours. TUI’s seasonal charters are usually sold as part of a package, so check package sites as well as the airlines.
When to go
Lanzarote is warm all year. Average highs at the island’s airport run from about 21°C in January to about 29°C to 30°C in August.
- Winter (December to February): around 21°C to 22°C by day. The main winter sun choice for Irish families.
- Spring (March to May): about 23°C to 25°C. Pleasant for walking and beach days.
- Summer (June to September): about 27°C to 30°C. Hot, with lots of sunshine.
- Autumn (October and November): about 24°C to 27°C. October is one of the best months.
Evenings can feel cool in winter, so pack a light jumper.
Sunshine is generous all year. The airport records about 200 hours of sun in January and more than 300 hours in July. Remember sun cream even in winter, as the sun is strong.
Where to stay
-
Avenida de las Playas: the long seafront strip, with beaches, bars and restaurants on the doorstep.
-
Old town and harbour: the original fishing village end of town, with a more traditional feel. Choose by what matters most. The seafront is best for convenience, the harbour for character, and the streets behind for value.
-
Uphill from the seafront: the town stretches about a kilometre inland. Hotels here can be quieter and cheaper, but check the walk back up.
Good for
- Families: easy beaches and lots of choice of apartments.
- Couples: plenty of restaurants along the promenade.
- Nightlife: plenty of bars along the Avenida de las Playas.
- Day trips: coach tours run through the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park, where access is tightly controlled.
Late deal tip
Because so many Irish airports fly to Lanzarote, check them all. A Shannon or Knock flight can beat Dublin on price, especially in school holidays. Then compare the same apartment on Booking.com with a flight and hotel package on Trip.com.
