Playa Blanca, Lanzarote
Playa Blanca guide for Irish families and couples: direct flights to Lanzarote, weather, sheltered beaches, where to stay and a late deal tip.

Why go
Playa Blanca is the southernmost town on Lanzarote and its newest resort. The name means “white beach”. It is a real town too, with about 14,000 residents, schools, a church, a harbour and its own local bus loop.
The coastline here forms one large bay, broken into three smaller bays. That shape keeps the beaches sheltered and good for swimming. It is a strong choice for families with young children and for couples who want a slower pace.
Getting there from Ireland
Playa Blanca uses Lanzarote Airport (ACE). Based on current airport route tables:
- Dublin: Aer Lingus and Ryanair, plus seasonal TUI charters
- Cork: Aer Lingus
- Shannon: Ryanair
- Knock: Ryanair
- Belfast International: Jet2, Ryanair, plus easyJet and TUI seasonally
The flight from Dublin takes about four hours. Shannon and Knock both list Lanzarote as a year-round Ryanair route, which helps if you live in the west. The resort is about 45 km from the airport, roughly a 40-minute drive.
When to go
Average highs at Lanzarote Airport give a good guide:
- Winter (December to February): about 21°C to 22°C. Reliable winter sun.
- Spring (March to May): about 23°C to 25°C.
- Summer (June to September): about 27°C to 30°C, peaking in August.
- Autumn (October and November): about 24°C to 27°C.
Bring a light layer for winter evenings. Sunshine is reliable, with the island’s airport recording over 200 hours of sun even in December and January. Summer brings more than 300 hours a month.
Playa Blanca is at the very south of the island, with the Atlantic to the east, west and south. Its coastline forms a bay about 9 km wide.
Where to stay
- Playa Dorada: the eastern bay, with a sheltered beach.
- Playa Blanca town beach: the central bay, close to the harbour, shops and restaurants.
- Playa Flamingo: the western bay, another sheltered swimming beach.
- Rubicón Marina: the busy marina area, a good base for couples.
The town’s bus station is at the northern edge of the commercial area, with direct or connecting buses to the rest of Lanzarote.
Good for
- Families: calm, sheltered bays.
- Couples: a slower pace, with the marina close by.
- Island hopping: ferries run from the harbour to Corralejo on Fuerteventura, so a day trip to a second island is easy. Fred Olsen Express and Naviera Armas both run the crossing.
- Getting around: a local bus loops through the town, and the bus station has links across the island.
Late deal tip
At about 45 km, the airport transfer is worth pricing in. A taxi for a family can add a fair amount each way. Compare a package that includes transfers with booking flight and hotel separately, then add the taxi cost to the separate option.
